Week 10 [20241130-20241206]

Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:

I like the agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur. The EU and several Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay) signed a broad agreement creating a common market of 700 million people by reducing tariffs on over 90% of goods. After 25 years of negotiations, the deal aims to enhance geopolitical and economic cooperation, sustainability, and combat deforestation. It includes significant trade boosts, annual tariff savings of €4 billion, and support for the green transition. Despite the benefits, countries such as France, Italy, and Poland oppose the agreement, citing farmers’ concerns. Ratification depends on the European Parliament and member states, with the final result still uncertain.

I dislike the political crisis that erupted in South Korea. President Yoon’s decision to impose martial law raises concerns about political stability and governmental transparency, although it was soon overturned. His actions test the confidence of Seoul’s allies and undermine the values that the country projects onto the international stage. His retreat in the face of opposition from the National Assembly highlights the strength of democratic institutions, but the damage to South Korea’s image is already evident. In this context, the crisis in South Korea is bringing to the fore the fragility of democratic systems, even in countries that traditionally are considered role models.
