Week 08 [20241116-20241122]

Every Monday, the CERESE publishes the assessment of the previous week’s news by the Research Trainees:

I like the referral of Hungary to the European Court of Justice. The Hungarian ‘Child Protection Law’ has been criticized for conflating pedophilia with homosexuality. Hungary cites a 2022 referendum as reasoning and claims that the law aims to protect children. However, the European Commission referred the country to the CJEU claiming that the law violates fundamental rights, promotes discrimination— thus violating EU core values— and contributes to a climate of fear. If Hungary is found to be at fault, it will have to pay a large fine, but most importantly, it may lead to the suspension of the country’s voting rights in EU meetings.

I dislike the escalation of missile attacks between Ukraine and Russia. More specifically, US President Joe Biden approved the use of ATACMS missiles by Ukrainian forces against Russia. This decision is related to North Korean troops near the Russian border. The United Kingdom and France have also supplied Ukraine with long-range missile systems, which could be used against Russian targets. These developments increase tension in the conflict and significantly affect the course of operations at a critical point in time, with Russia restating the threat of using nuclear weapons.
